HP’s new technology rethinks computer architecture

The Machine is six times more powerful than existing computational devices.

HP has unveiled a new machine that has the potential to revolutionise computing and cope with the massive amounts of data generated by mobile devices and the Internet of things (a network composed of household appliances, cars, vending machines and many other devices).

The Machine is designed to cope with tonnes of information by using clusters of special-purpose cores that are more efficient than generalised cores. It is wired with photonics instead of copper wires, meaning it consumes 80 times less energy and is much faster. According to HP, it can handle 160 petabytes of data in 250 nanoseconds.

The Machine is six times more powerful than existing servers. However, the first models powered by this technology won’t be commercially available until 2018.
The result is a computer that can handle dramatically larger amounts of data, all the while using much less power. A Machine server could address 160 petabytes of data in 250 nanoseconds; HP says its hardware should be about six times more powerful than an existing server, even as it consumes 80 times less energy. Ditching older technology like copper also encourages non-traditional, three-dimensional computing shapes (you're looking at a concept here), since you're not bound by the usual distance limits. The Machine shouldn't just be for data centers and supercomputers, either -- it can shrink down to laptops and phones.
To HP, the platform opens the door to large-scale computing concepts that aren't even possible today, since devices can talk to entire networks to get things done. A doctor could compare your symptoms with that of every other patient on Earth, even while keeping everything private; smart cell towers would be aware of what's going on across other towers and react accordingly. The shift in thinking is significant enough that HP is writing its own operating system from scratch to handle what's possible with The Machine. It's also creating an optimized version of Android, so there is a chance you'll see Machine-based gadgets in your pocket.
The big obstacle at this point is simply timing. HP won't even have samples of the necessary memory until 2015, while the first devices using The Machine are expected to ship in 2018. However, the tech firm is also attempting the kind of fundamental shift that the industry hasn't seen in decades -- this is going to take a while as a matter of course.

The Last of Us: Remastered Revealed for PS4

Update: Amazon now has The Last of Us Remastered available for pre-order for $60.
The description reads, "The Last of Us Remastered includes the Abandoned Territories Map Pack, Reclaimed Territories Map Pack, and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us: Left Behind Single Player campaign that combines themes of survival, loyalty, and love with tense, survival-action gameplay." Remastered will also be in 1080p, and feature "In-game cinematic commentary from the cast and creative director."
It looks like The Last of Us: Remastered, a new updated version for PS4, is on its way.
A banner advertisement on the Sony Entertainment Network online store has revealed the remastered edition's existence. We suspect the news has come a little earlier than intended, as the banner currently links to a "page not found" error; we've included a screenshot above, just in case it gets taken down.
The Last of Us: Remastered will cost $60.
Last month, a PlayStation rep for the Eurasian region said that a PS4 version of The Last of Us was on its way, scheduled for a summer release. He revealed that it would come with the Left Behind DLC, and that copies would be available in both physical and digital download forms.
The Last of Us launched on PlayStation 3 in June 2013; it sold six million copies.
Left Behind was released a couple of months ago, but unfortunately, no other story-based single-player DLC is planned for the series.

Reasonably high then—enough to be out of some people's gaming ability. That said, it mostly seems high due to an unseasonably long last-gen console cycle, where a 4 GB RAM requirement became the barrier that must not be breached. It is perhaps time that things moved on.

MS Ends Supporting Win XP from 8th of April

What is Windows XP end of support?

On April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP will no longer be available. Don't let your PC go unprotected.

Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.
As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to help protect your PC.)
If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.
